TANK Fuel gauge. The fuel warning light comes
on when there are less than 1 3/4 Imp. gal. (8 liters)
left in the tank.
MPH Speedometer and odometer.
The speedometer is graduated in mph and the
odometer shows the total mileage of the vehicle.
O. Oil pressure warning light. Glows red to indicate
fn dangerously low oil pressure or oil level. If it
lights up while you are driving, switch off the
engine at once and investigate the cause.
D. Direction indicator repeater light. Flashes green
in time with the direction indicators.
G. Charge indicator light. If this light glows yellow,
the alternator is not charging.
H. High beam warning light. Shows a blue light when
2. Headlight and parking light switch. the headlights are on high beam.
Flicking the switch to first position turns on the
parking lights, irrespective of the ignition switch
position. Flicking to second position turns on the BR
headlights as well, but only if the ignition key is
at G” or ’K’’. In this second position the switch
plate is flush with the instrument panel, which
minimizes the risk of accidentally switching off
the headlights in the dark.
NOTE! If the headlights are already on, i.e. if the
light switch is in second position, when the ignition
key is turned to “L”, all lights will be extinguished.
If for any reason you want to have the parking
lights on while the ignition switch is in position
"L" the light switch must be returned to first
position.
5. Hazard warning signal switch. All direction indicator
lights flash together when the button is pulled out.
The hazard warning signal must only be used when
the vehicle is stalled in the roadway, e.g. after an
accident or breakdown, in a position where it is
liable to endanger or obstruct traffic.

C. Choke indicator light. Glows red when the choke
knob is pulled out.
. Brake indicator light. Glows red when the hand-
brake is on or to indicate excessive pedal travel.
This may be caused by leakage from one of the
two brake line circuits. (Wear on brake pads is
indicated by increased pedal pressure.) If this
light lights up, investigate the cause of the trouble
as soon as possible and have the fault repaired by
an authorized Saab dealer,

1. Headlight and parking light switch.
The switch has three positions: off, parking lights on
and headlights on.
When the switch is pushed in to the first stop the
parking lights are turned on regardless of the posi-

Pushing in to the second stop turns on the headlights
as well if the ignition key is at G or K.

switch is pushed in to the second stop, and the
ignition key is turned back to L, all outside lights
will be extinguished. If for any reason you want
to have the parking lights on while the ignition

Removing the instrument panel
1. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
2. Undo the two retaining screws at the bottom edge of
the panel.
3. Lift out the panel and disconnect the wiring.
Install in the reverse order.
On model 1970 there is a screen below the instru-
ment panel which is divided at the steering solumn. The
left and right sections of the screen can be removed
separately, which is necessary if instrument light bulbs
or the speedometer cable have to be exchanged.

Removal and installation
As this instrument forms an independent unit, it can be
removed and replaced without interference with the other
instruments.
1, Disconnect the ground lead, pull out the light bulb
holders together with connecting wiring, and discon-
nect the speedometer cable.
2. Squeeze the two retaining springs together and pull
the instrument out of the panel.
REMOVING THE INSTRUMENT UNIT
3. To refit the instrument, push in with the two springs
lined up with the recesses in the panel.
4. Reconnect all wiring, insert bulb holders and connect
the speedometer cable.
NOTE! As from model 1970 the speedometer cable has
a bayonet fitting.

instrument
These instruments form separate units and can be inde-
pendently removed from the instrument panel: discon-
nect wiring, compress the retaining springs and pull the
instrument out of the panel.
Any repair or adjustment of these instruments should
be done by a specialist workshop.
Changing instrument light bulbs
1. Push in the flat part of the bulb holder and give ita
quarter turn, after which the entire bulb holder can be
removed.
. Pull the bulb out of the contact springs in the holder.
3. Push in the new bulb and mount the holder, locking
it by giving it a quarter turn.

Changing the clock or cigarette lighter (1970 and later
models)
Remove the ashtray. Unship the glove compartment and
bend its left wall carefully inward to reach the clock and
lighter.
To remove the lighter, disconnect the cable and unscrew
the nut that secures the mounting bracket.
To remove the clock, disconnect the cable and then un-
screw the two nuts that hold the mounting bracket.
NOTE! When installing the clock, remember that the
black cable must be clamped under one of the nuts.

NOTE
If the radiator fan fails to start, the reason may be
faulty ground contact between the radiator and

2. Disconnect the hose on the left-hand side of the fresh-
air hood and remove the cable grommet from the low-

3. Remove the instrument panel unit. Take out the cable ee
grommet from the upper dash panel.
4. Insert the new cabie through the holes in the dash

5. Fit the cable grommet in the lower dash panel and re-
connect the fresh-air hose. Connect the cable to the Fuel level transmitter

Radiator fan
General
The radiator fan is driven by an electric motor and is lo-
cated behind the radiator. The fan is thermostat-con-
trolled. The thermoswitch is located on the left of the
radiator. Instructions for removing and installing the
radiator fan will be found in group 2.
Checking operation of radiator fan
To check the operation of the radiator fan, switch on the
ignition and then disconnect the cable from the radiator
fan thermoswitch and ground the cable shoe. The fan should
then start. Exchange the thermoswitch if defective.
