Changing the heat exchanger anc water
valve

To change the heat exchanger and water

valve, remove them as an integral unit.

1. Remove the cover under the switches
on the steering column

%. Sore cars have a centre console which
must also he removed (see page 853-2).

5. Remove the lower sectian of the instru-
ment panel.

4. Remove the sir diffuser (5 serews).

f. Remove the control rod fram between
the water valve and the contral knob by
sliding the red forward as far as it will
go, so that it comes free fram the knob.
Next, pull the red back to free it [rom
the water valve. The plastic joint at. the
conleol kaob is secessible from under-
neath once the switehes below the hea-
ter controls have been pressed back-
wards,

7.Remove the lower section of the heater
housing.

8.Drain off sufficient coolant to enable
the hoses to the water valve in the
engine compartment to be disconnected
without spillage. To prevent coolant
leaking onte the carpeting, plug the
hose ends before remeving the heat
exchanger/water valve.

9. Separate the heat exchanger with walter
valve fram the heater housing and guide
it backwards and downwards, To make
sure there is room for the water valve
to pass between the heater fiausing and
the steering calimn, unhook the brake
pedal return spring and depress the pe-
dal slightly.

10.Remove the capillary tube fram the
heat exchanger (where applicable) and
the screws/bolts in the water valve
Hange.

11. Always renew the gasket far the water
valve flange. Handle the capillary tube
with care, never allowing if to become
kinked or creased,

Refit in the reverse order,

Removing the fan motor

1. Disconnect the pasitive battery lead.

2. Remove the switch panel,

3. Remove the upper section of the instru-
ment panel.

4. Diseonnect the leads to the fan motor,
9» Remave the attachment screws for the
right-hand defroster valve housing.

G Remove the fan motar retaining

screws.
7. Lift out the fan motor.

Refit in the reverse order.

Changing the air filter in the heating sys-
tem

Lindo the four retaining screws and with-
draw the filter. Fit a new filter, Change
the filter every 18 000 miles (30 DOO km).

Caution
Avoid bouching the filter-element.
The filter element cantains glass fi-
bres which can eause skin ivritation.

HANDLING THE FIl TER,

1983 models onwards: The cover is incar-
porated im the filter Casing and secured by
four plastic elips, To remove the cover,
turn the clips a 1/4 turn clockwise or anti-
clockwise. To refit, reverse the removal
procedure,
