Reconditioning the distributor (removed from car)
Disassembling
1, Undo the two retaining screws of the distributor
arm (rotor) and remove the distributor arm.
2. Drive out the cotter pin from the distributor drive
gear.
3. Tap the shaft gently with a drift inserted through
the hexagonal hole in the distributor drive gear.
4. Pull the distributor shaft up and out.

LIFTING OUT THE DISTRIBUTOR SHAFT
5. Detach both coil springs from the advance mecha-
nism and remove the weights.
6. The breaker cam can then be separated from the
distributor shaft.
7. Disconnect the breaker arm wiring.
Disconnect the ground lead to the condenser.
9. Remove the lock ring that holds the breaker plate
and lift out the plate.
i)
REMOVING THE LOCK RING
10. Take out the lubricating felt pad.
11, Remove the vacuum regulator after undoing both
retaining screws.
12. Remove the condenser from the breaker plate.
13. Undo the retaining screws of the fixed breaker
contact and lift out the contact together with the
breaker arm mounted on it.
14. Remove the rubber seal from the distributor hous-
ing.
15. Inspect all parts, clean them and exchange any that
are defective.
Assembling
1. Fit the rubber ring on the distributor housing.
Mount the vacuum regulator on the distributor
housing, not forgetting to secure the ground lead
with one of the retaining screws.
3. Insert and oil the felt pad.
4. Mount the breaker plate and its lock ring, making
sure that the arm of the vacuum regulator is hooked
into its hole in the plate and that the ground lead
is not caught between the housing and breaker plate.
5. Insert the fixed breaker contact complete with
attached breaker arm and insert the retaining screws,
but do not tighten them finally yet.
6. Mount the condenser on the breaker plate and con-
nect the ground lead to the retaining screw. Make
sure that the fixed breaker contact does not touch
the condenser — some clearance must be left for
adjustment.
7. Connect the condenser lead and the lead from the
breaker arm to the insulated contact plate. The
pressure of the breaker arm leaf spring will hold
the cable shoes in place.

Fill the groove of the distributor shaft generously
with grease and fit the breaker cam.
Coat the breaker cam with grease.
After lubricating, insert the distributor shaft into
the housing.
Fit the spacer washer and push the gear on to the
shaft until the cotter pin hole is lined up. The axial
play of the distributor must be 0,005—0.011 in.
(0.12—0.28 mm). Measure with a feeler gauge and
adjust by shimming if necessary.
Knock in the cotter pin. The distributor shaft must
be properly supported during this operation.
Fit the governor weights and springs.
Turn the distributor shaft until the breaker arm is
lifted right clear of the fixed breaker contact. Place
a screwdriver in the adjusting groove and slot on
the fixed breaker contact and turn the screwdriver
to adjust the contact gap. Tighten the retaining
screws and check the gap again.
Fit the rotor arm, making sure that its square lo-
cating stud engages the distributor shaft properly.

3. Coat the breaker cam with grease.
4. Adjust the contact gap (cam angle) :
a) Contact gap
Turn the crankshaft until the breaker arm is lifted
right clear of the fixed breaker contact. Place a
screwdriver in the adjusting groove and slot on the
fixed breaker contact and adjust the gap by turning
the screwdriver. Tighten the retaining screws and
check the gap once again.
b) Cam angle
Connect a cam angle meter, switch on the ignition
and turn the engine over with the starter. Compare
the indicated reading with the specification figure
(see group 0) and correct if necessary by adjusting
the fixed breaker contact. Tighten the retaining
screws and recheck the setting.
NOTE
The lower setting should be used for new contacts,
as the angle grows greater with wear.

Checking and setting the ignition point
1. Connect Saab’s ignition service instrument (TSI) or
separate cam angle meter, revolution counter and
stroboscope lamp.
. Pull off the vacuum hose.
3. Switch on the ignition and check the cam angle at
starter speed and idling speed. Adjust as necessary.
4. Check the ignition point setting at starter speed or an
engine speed of not more than 800 rev/min.
5. If necessary, slacken the distributor retaining screws
using a special wrench 839039 (1.7 and 1.85 | engines)
or 839198 (2.0 | engine) and rotate the distributor
housing (clockwise for earlier ignition, counterclock-
wise for later ignition). See Group 0 for correct set-
tings. Reconnect the vacuum hose. Adjust the engine
idling speed.

Checking out the distributor on a test bench
Test according to the directions supplied with the test
equipment. See ignition advance graph for correct settings.
NOTE
1. The distributor rotates at half the speed of the
engine.
2. The camshaft angle is half the crankshaft angle.
The contact pressure must be checked with a spring bal-
ance secured opposite the breaker arm contact.
Pressure too low — the contacts bounce
Pressure too high — undue wear on cam fender and cams.
If the distributor is tested when mounted on the engine,
the main point to remember is that the advance angle and
speed readings will be double those obtained on a distri-
butor test bench. There may also be some deviation in
the readings due to engine vibration.
