Shift-up indicator 213
Operation
The shift-up indicator is fitted to cars with manual
transmissions delivered to the U.S.A. market.
It enables the driver to use the engine characteristics
in the best possible manner, thus minimising the fuel
consumption. Indication is provided by a lamp which
lights up when the driver should shift up, i.e. when
the engine speed and throttle setting have attained
certain values.
The shift-up indicator receives its supply from fuse 4
when the ignition switch is in the drive position.
Shift-up indicator relay 270 receives information on
the engine speed from ignition pulse amplifier 147
(1987 model), control unit 176 (1988 116 Lambda),
or ignition system amplifier 146 (1988 18 Lambda
and T16 Lambda). Vacuum switch 263 provides in-
formation on the vacuum in the intake manifold.
When the engine speed has exceeded 1800 + 100
r/min and the vacuum is about 0.3 bar, lamp 47K in
the combined instrument will light up.
To avoid incorrect indications, the system is
equipped with the following switches:
@ Switch 264, which switches out the system when
5th gear is engaged.
e@ Temperature switch 262, which switches out the
system when the engine temperature is below
about +35 °C.
@ Throttle contacts 203/261, which switch out the
system when the throttle is in the rest position
In order to avoid irritating flashing of the lamp on
sudden changes in the engine loading, the relay
includes a time-delay function which delays light-
ing-up of the lamp by 1.7 s and switching-off by

Turn the ignition switch to the drive position and
check fuse 4. Check also that the supply to the
fuse is live.
Check shift-up warning lamp 47K.
Check that the switches in the system close and
open the circuit under the specified conditions.
Check that ignition pulses are received by
shift-up indicator relay 270.
Check the connectors and earth connections.

Operation
The supply is taken from fuse 25 to temperature
switch 39, regardless of the ignition switch position.
When the engine coolant temperature has reached
around 92 °C, the temperature switch will close and
radiator fan motor 37 will start.
Cars with air conditioning (AC) are equipped with a
crimped branch connection, since the fan is also
controlled by the AC unit.
Time-delay relay
Cars for "hot-weather markets” are also equipped
with a time-delay relay, which limits the time the
radiator fan will run after the engine has been
switched off.
Relay 26 is always energised when the engine is
running, i.e. when the ignition switch is in the drive
position. The fan is controlled by switch 39.
When the engine is shut off, the +15 supply to the
relay coil will be interrupted. After about 10 minutes,
the relay will trip the supply to the fan motor, even if
temperature switch 39 is still closed.
Cars for SE, Fl, EU and GB markets
On these markets, the wiring for the AC is not fitted as
Standard to cars with I8 and T8 engines. An AC cable
harness must be fitted when the AC is installed.
Fault-tracing hints
1. Check fuse 25 and check that the supply to it is
live.
2. Check that the supply to temperature switch 39
is live.
3. Check the radiator fan by connecting a jumper
across the temperature switch.
4. Runthe engine until it reaches normal operating
temperature and check the performance of the
temperature switch.
5. Check the connectors, cable harnesses and
earth connections.
If the car is equipped with a time-delay relay, check
the relay and fuse 22.
